Discover the new exhibition at the Centre d'art Sébastien. The exhibition Des Fauves en Provence will show how the Fauve movement developed in Provence, its Provençal specificities and its impact on twentieth-century painting.
Indeed, the 19th century was dominated by a style of painting that was "drawn" and left little room for color. The invention of the paint tube and the expansion of the railways at the end of the century prompted painters to leave their studios and paint from the canvas: this was the birth of Impressionism. A few years later, colors became even more pronounced and vivid, and flat tints of color became more pronounced; at the 1905 annual exhibition at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, a room was devoted to this painting style, which differed from Impressionism. On seeing this room, an art critic exclaimed: "An arch-clear room, with outrageous, outrageous people, whose intentions must be deciphered, leaving the clever and the foolish the right to laugh, criticism too easy. [...] In the center of the room, a child's torso and a small marble bust by Albert Marque, who models with delicate science. The candor of these busts is surprising in the midst of the orgy of pure tones: Donatello chez les fauves". With these words, Fauvism was born. The exhibition at the Centre d'Art Sébastien takes up these initial intentions and, through the 31 works on display, shows the artists who were present at the 1905 Salon. Among them are Manguin, Camoin and Dufy, as well as Girieud, Lombard and Seyssaud for their Provencal specificities.
